Standing at the Helm: Guardrail for King County Council Chambers, 1996
MEDIUM: BLOWN GLASS FINIALS, POWDER COATED STEEL FRAME, BRONZE SHIP FITTINGS,
BRASS VERTICAL RAILINGS WITH PATINA/POWDERCOAT
My artistic intention was to integrate a contemporary railing into an historic
building. I paid homage to Seattle as a port city and as a glass-arts
center; and acknowledged the railing in relationship to the embellished,
arch-windowed architecture.
The purpose of the space, for deliberation by an important governmental
body, also figured in my thinking. I made the railing dignified,
finely detailed, and beautiful - all in service to the context,
the intention, and the meaning of the space.
One can stand at the railing, looking out to the harbor, hands encircling a glass globe colored like the planet earth - standing at the helm of the ship of state.
This railing was commissioned through the King County Arts Commission’s
ARTIST
MADE BUILDING PARTS PROJECT.
Project architects, Maureen Thomas and Pat Zuberbuehler. Budget: $21,500
