In 1989, as my work got larger and more complex, the problem of studio space became critical. I had helped design and build two houses, but knew that I needed the larger, more industrial spaces that a warehouse loft would provide. I also craved a community of professional artists. Working with a realtor, I found the collaboration and benefits of working within a wonderful old warehouse built in 1906, and put together a group of artists to buy and renovate this building for artists live/work spaces.

We call it the Sunny Arms Artist Cooperative; an award winning 35,000 sq./ft building in the industrial area of Seattle, that houses a community of about 25 artists of all disciplines.”

LEFT: This interior view shows the open canopy of sheet-metal topped with a tangle of tumbleweeds that soften the geometry. Two old posts, the dry rot at the top exaggerated with chain-saw marks, flank the entry and mark a choice between entry to the living side on the left or the art-working side on the right.

RIGHT: Living Room view showing the library up the steps to the right, and the kitchen to the left. The table is made of copper sheeting, screws, & granite, and Nepalese rug designed by artist 1989-96.
